Our Events

Events Overview

The 2025 Science Symposium will be an exciting, multi-day event taking place in historic downtown Flowery Branch and throughout the Northeast Georgia area. Here’s what to expect:

  • Main Event Dates: March 2nd – 6th, 2025
  • Satellite Events: March 7th – 14th, 2025
  • Closing Ceremonies: March 14th, 2025, in celebration of Pi Day

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be taking over all of downtown Flowery Branch for this incredible event!

Keynote Speakers

  • Sunday: Brian Olson – Space Exploration 2025: A Space Nerd’s Global View
    • Topics: Rockets, moonwalks, geosynchronous satellite orbits
    • Time: 6 PM
  • Monday: Manolo of the Gwinnett School of Music – Memory & Music: Increasing Intelligence from In Utero to “Old-Timer’s”
    • Time: 6:30 PM
  • Tuesday: Allison with Paradox Protein – The Science of Edible Bugs
    • Includes bread, muffin, and cookie cricket flour tastings
    • Time: 6:30 PM

Daily Highlights

Sunday (March 2nd):

  • Open to the public: 4 PM – 9 PM
  • Opening Ceremonies:
    • Time: 5 PM
    • Performances: Young Singers Chorus (The Star-Spangled Banner), Presentation of The Colors by North Gwinnett High School AirForce JROTC
  • Evening Experiment: Audience participation in launching glow-in-the-dark water-bottle rockets

Monday (March 3rd):

  • Open to the public: 4 PM – 9 PM
  • Activities: First Responder Competition (Firefighters vs. Police), 4 PM – 6 PM
  • Evening Experiment: Instrument Petting Zoo with performances and audience participation

Tuesday (March 4th):

  • Open to the public: 4 PM – 9 PM
  • Activities: Trucks and Tractors Exploration, 4 PM – 6 PM
  • Evening Experiment: Edible bug tastings and butterfly camouflage experiments

Wednesday (March 5th):

  • Open to the public: 10 AM – 3 PM
  • Special Highlights:
    • Live animals all day, including Hand Me Down Zoo
    • A Taste of Laos sample buffet hosted by 4 Elephants Restaurant
    • Chair massages, hourly speaker sessions, and experiments every half-hour

Thursday (March 6th):

  • Open to the public: 10 AM – 3 PM
  • Activities: Cricket spitting contest, paper airplane contest, scavenger hunt, and punch paintings
  • Closing Activity: Square Dance Exhibition (Memory and Motion for New Neural Pathways!)

Satellite Events (March 7th - 14th)

Events hosted at various locations in Northeast Georgia, including:

  • Native Plants and Cherokee Roots at The Ecology Center in Linwood Nature Preserve
  • Anatomy of Self-Defense at PURE Krav Maga
  • The Science and Design of Board Games at Meeple Madness
  • Driving Tour of Atlanta Safari Park
  • STEM Electricity at Sparkles Gwinnett
  • Evening firefighter events (because FIRE burns brightest at night!)

Explosive Closing Ceremonies (March 14th):

  • Open to the public: 4 PM – 9 PM
  • Hourly Explosions: Confetti cannons, ping pong balls, color-changing fire pits, and more surprises
  • Food & Drinks:
    • FREE pizza pie from local restaurants (Papa John’s, Johnny’s New York Style Pizza)
    • Pie slices for sale at $3.14 each (flavors: pecan, apple, lemon chess, chocolate chess)
  • Awards: Camouflaged butterfly discovery competition
  • Additional Highlights:
    • Dahlonega Wine Tours shuttle, Braselton Trolley, and potential carriage rides

Tactile tables, Mad Scientist exhibits, and model trains with Thomas the Tank Engine

Recurring Features Throughout the Symposium

  • Daily T-Shirt Contest (Judged on true, humor, legibility, uniqueness, and theme)
    • Prizes include: Aztec Death Whistle, solar-powered fireflies, pill-popping pen set
  • Rescue Society of the Day:
    • Participants include Dirt Road Doggies, Hall County Animal Shelter, Evelyn’s Place, and DayDream Animal Sanctuary
  • Exhibits & Activities: Tactile tables, experiments, vendors, chainsaw artist, live animals, Wreck-a-Wreck, and more!
